The 2027 Carmi Mayoral race is heating up after former Mayor Bill Stendeback's sudden resignation on October 5. As of this report, four candidates have picked up petitions for candidacy for Mayor. (see report here.)
At Tuesday night's Carmi City Council meeting, one of the potential candidates addressed the board about a plan to work on the City's debt on the sewer treatment plant. This is the first time anyone has publicly talked about the sewer plant since the Council failed to approve a bid to allow the sale of it in July. Recently requested emails have recently revealed that conversation between the City of Carmi and Illinois Water towards a sale had been ongoing since August of 2024. The July meetings were attended by at least 100 people and had to be moved to the Farm Bureau building to accommodate, while the council first opened the bid and then voted to reject it.
