The Enfield Village board on Tuesday evening held a lengthy discussion about their insurance carrier’s recommendation that $700 more in coverage is needed to secure the liability of the Village to have fireworks at their July 4 event. According to the trustees, it is not legally required by the State, but insurance companies recommend it, to which they take issue. In the past, the village has spent $1,000 annually on the insurance. It was noted that the 4th of July event only uses consumer-grade fireworks and not commercial grade, which are required by law to carry the insurance.
Jim Bolin made his feelings known, saying “I don't have a problem with helping pay for the insurance or getting the insurance. But the thing is, it shouldn't be required. The insurance companies is getting as bad as some of the other extortion money we have to pay. You know, they find a niche...we’re going to just take some more of your money. We're tired of people dipping into our pocket. We got things we need to do with it, you know.”
Mayor Maurie Black said he had asked the insurance representative to attend the meeting and explain to the board why he says it is needed, but was unable to schedule with him. The mayor said he will try to get him to come to the May meeting and explain it.
