The NCOE Jr. High volleyball team opened their season with three wins as they hosted Carrier Mills on Monday, Feb. 3.
The varsity team had a strong showing as they won in two games, 25-10, 25-11. Ashton Healy led the scoring with fourteen points, eight of them aces. Ally Black followed with nine points, including four aces. Maddie Colbert and Elizabeth Martin had six points each, with three and four aces respectively. Caite Weiss had one point.
Halle Everett led the attack with three kills and Black and Martin added one kill each. Healy had two assists in the win and Black had one. Riley Price and Elizabeth Davis also contributed to the victory over the Wildcats.
“The girls played a good, solid game,” said Coach Jaclyn Melton. “It was a good way to start the season.”
The junior varsity team also notched a victory, winning their match 25-11, 25-16. Natalie Wilson led the serving battle with fifteen points, eight that were aces. Curtlyn Hayes followed with four aces and nine points total. Emily Cox and Brooke Sell recorded four points each as Kaleigh Phillips, Henissee Anderson, and Shaylyn Healy each served two.
Sell and Phillips both recorded two kills and Cox had two assists. Presleigh Bishop also participated in the win. “The girls did a good job in their first outing,” Coach Cathy Black said of the performance. “They picked up the switching well and served very consistently.”
In the “C” game, the Jr. Cardinals won 42-37 in a 21 minute timed contest. Alissa Hampton lead the scoring with six points. Emilee Bishop served four as Kiley Roser served three. Tori Karnes served two points and Abby Black dropped in one.
Sarah Smith recorded three passes and Grace Waters had two. Madison Cozart and Anna Martin got one each and Makayla Healy had one set. “This group of girls has worked very hard in practice, and getting on the court finally helps them see how it all goes together.” Coach Black said following the win.
The Jr. Cardinals saw the rest of the week’s schedule get snowed out, missing out on Thursday’s game against New Hope. The girls hope to get back on the court this week, with two games scheduled against Thompsonville at home and away and a road trip to Galatia planned as well.
