Penny Gunter and Trey Mason highlighted the Carmi Kiwanis club Thursday on the Carmi-White County volleyball and golf teams.
Gunter, C-WC head volleyball coach, said she enjoys coaching this group of girls because they are dedicated to working hard to make themselves a better team. She has five seniors, four juniors, six sophomores and six freshmen on the squad this year. She is assisted by Brianne Douthitt and Chris Lucas. At the varsity level, they are 5-5 and have already had more injuries in one season than she has experienced in her entire coaching career. She commented that although they have had several injuries, the team remains very competitive. They recently won 3rd place at the NCOE varsity tournament where two players were named “All- Tournament”. The team will also play in the Marion tournament on October 6th. The junior-varsity has a record of 3-3
Coach Gunter explained that the team has a new software tool called “Huddle” that allows videos of the matches to be dissected into usable format for review. This allows the coaches to show the players where improvements can be made by selecting specific sections of the video. This tool was purchased with funds from their 300 point fundraiser match.
Trey Mason, junior high teacher and high school golf coach, said his love for golf started in the second grade and allowed him to further his education at Oakland City University to play on a golf scholarship. He loves the game and the opportunities that come along with the sport.
The golf teams continue to be young this year, but very talented. The boy’s team has only one senior and one junior, but eight underclassmen (four sophomores and four freshman). The girl’s team has two juniors, two sophomores, and three freshmen. The boy’s team is undefeated and only has four matches left in the regular season, all at home.
On September 14, CWC will host a golf ball drop during half-time at the varsity football game. Over 600 balls will be dropped with a chance to win $400 for the closest to the pin and $100 to the second closest.
In Carmi Kiwanis Club business, Phil Stocke won the 50/50. The meal was prepared by Yesterday’s.
