We have seen an increase lately in scams against our citizens here in White County. Numerous people have been contacted by phone advising that they have won a large sum of money. They are required to pay a certain amount in order for the money to be sent to them. The caller will know your name and certain information about you. They have asked if you are a Christian and hopefully you will put the money to good use. They will ask for as little as $100 to be sent. They will also ask you to mortgage your home to send them more money. A cash Visa card is preferred. It can be very difficult to tell if these calls are legitimate. These people are very good at scams and will take your money!
The Sheriff ’s Office wants to remind you that any money sent in these scams will be lost. These people are not your “friends” as they will try to tell you. They will only stop when you run out of money. Do not give money in order to “win” a prize. Do not give out any personal information over the phone. If it sounds too good to be true, it is! Ask a friend or family member if it sounds like a scam to them. Be cautious at all times.
Our senior citizens are the main target for scams like this because they are often home alone and easier to contact. Scammers can be relentless, calling many times a day. Ask for a call back number; this will often end the conversation. Contact the Sheriff ’s Office if you feel you are being contacted by a scam artist. We can help!
