A dispute in Enfield brought White County Sheriff's Deputy George Spencer to 218 E. Main St., along with Illinois State Police Troopers, where Cary A. Cone and Shawn M. Burgess live on adjoining properties and had once been involved in a dating relationship. Law enforcement was familiar with the two, having responded to disputes between them on more than one occasion.
Cone told Deputy Spencer that at approximately 12:00 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 2, Burgess had come onto her porch and started screaming at her. She stated she had been asleep on the couch in her living room when Burgess began kicking the outside of the front door, striking it hard enough that the interior door facing came loose from the wall. He did not gain entry to the home. The Deputy observed that the door appeared to have been struck by something. He observed a hammer laying on the arm of the couch, but Cone said she kept the hammer there to defend herself if Burgess gained entry. She stated she did not wish to file charges against Burgess at this time, but wanted the incident documented, and for police to tell Burgess to stay away from her and her home. The Deputy explained the process to Cone for obtaining an Order of Protection against Burgess.
Illinois State Troopers spoke to Burgess outside the house. He stated he arrived home late and that Cone called for him to come to her front door where she began screaming at him, accusing him of being with another woman. Burgess stated that Cone said she had a man inside her home who would "take care of him." He said she picked up a hammer and begin striking the interior side of the front door, then said she would call the police and have him arrested. Burgess said he too called the police to report the matter. Burgess was advised that Cone did not want him to come back onto her property, and Burgess said he would stay away from her.
An incident report was completed and placed on file at the White County Sheriff's Department.
