In the Gospel of Luke is the story of the crucifixion. Part of this is Jesus telling a repentant thief , “on this day you will be with me in Paradise.” We all know the story and that it's problematic.
As faith leaders point out, the thief did not recite the sinners prayer. It was understandably inconvenient to kneel at an alter, what with all the joints pierced with nails, and hoisting, and such. However, he did not recite the mandated prayer. How could the preacher verify his redemption? He (and preachers are only a “he”) could not. They cry “foul”.
