Hunters in Illinois harvested a preliminary total of 158,010 deer during all 2022-2023 archery and firearm seasons that concluded Jan. 15. The total preliminary deer harvest for all seasons compares with a total harvest of 146,438 deer for all seasons in 2021-2022.
During the 2022-2023 deer seasons, hunters took 45.04% females and 54.96% males. [Read more...]

1, Pritzker signs “Deer Rifle Hunting” Bill. Bill Number HB4386. Allows the use of a single shot centerfire rifle to harvest deer during the firearm open season set by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. No more venison for me, for now.
Viral diseases in deer, both epizootic hemorrhagic disease and bluetongue disease, chronic wasting disease, and now confirmed cases of the Covid-19 virus being found in deer have made me decide to no longer eat any venison or venison products.
We all know that, just like people, deer get all kinds of diseases, cancers, etc. That’s nature of course, NOT ‘global climate change’. Heck, I’m sure that domestic cattle and fowl being raised in crowded feedlots, fed artificial chemicals and steroids to raise their weight probably get more illnesses that deer do. You don’t hear much about that, do you, other than an occasional article about ‘avian (bird) flu”, causing massive exterminations of domestic herds of fowl. Recently, the Arizona Fish and Game Commission unanimously voted to ban trail cameras year round and state wide, the country’s first full ban for hunters.
Various considerations have been discussed, such as “fair chase”, the “that’s my deer” attitude of many hunters, hunter-on-hunter conflicts of the placement of trail cams, and many more. Granted, each state is different. Each state has its own environmental and political issues. [Read more...]
