Carmi-White County Unit #5 has worked with the Greater Wabash Food Council on a USDA grant. The Seeds of Hope Farm2School programming offered by the Greater Wabash Food Council (GWFC) will organize school leaders, teachers, volunteers, and producers in ten school districts located in Edwards, Lawrence, Richland, Wabash, Wayne, and White counties in SE Illinois over the next 24 months. The program will begin in this coming August for the 2024/2025 school year.
The details of the grant are as follows:
1- Offers linkage between local producers and schools that will allow schools to order seasonally available products in the first 12 and last 12 weeks of the school year. The goal is to increase to 10% replacement of overall food served.
2- Provides monthly oversight and technical assistance to support school garden projects.
3- Provides education that creates learning paths that will create experimental experiences for children and bring food safety knowledge.
