The first ever of its kind in White County, a PRIDE weekend, was held in Carmi on October 17 and 18. Promoted as an event to raise visibility and show support for the LGBTQ+ community, participants came together on Saturday and Sunday evening with rainbow flags and some BLM flags, then drove through a parade route both nights. A Facebook group, started “on a whim” by Christine Hunter of Carmi, said that Christine was hoping to get at least 30 people, but by the end of the week, the group had over 700 members and there were more than 100 people who participated in the parade. Christine said she received messages from people supporting the idea, but also saw comments from those who did not support the idea.
