Following a chilly weekend of play at the Frozen Fairfield Tournament, the Lady Cardinal Softball team was ready to get their regular season underway as they headed to Junction Tuesday afternoon to take on the Gallatin County Lady Hawks in a Greater Egyptian Conference match up.
The Lady Cardinals started the game out strong as Emma Tauiliili ripped a double to the fence and was sacrificed to third base on a Madyson Barton bunt. Natalie Wilson would then record the game’s first RBI to give NCOE the early 1-0 lead following one inning of play. NCOE picked right back up in the second inning when Mattie Wells led off with a double to then advance and score on an errant throw giving the Lady Cardinals a two run lead. The NCOE defense remained strong thus far holding the Lady Hawks scoreless as they entered the third inning. At this time, the Lady Cardinals would put together three more hits which led to two runs extending their advantage to four runs. The bottom of the third inning would find the Lady Cardinal defense surrendering their first run following some fielding miscues enabling the Lady Hawks to draw within three runs (4-1). The fourth inning would find both teams coming up empty on the offensive end to keep the score standing at 4-1. This momentary offensive slowdown came to a quick stop in the top of the fifth inning when the Lady Cardinals erupted for seven runs on eight hits (one of those being a monstrous two run blast by Natalie Wilson) to stretch the score to 11-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning. At this time, the Lady Cardinal defense would step up to leave a runner stranded as they collected the five inning victory to start the GEC season at 1-0.
Leading the way at the plate for NCOE (1-2, 1-0) was Mattie Wells as she collected a team high three hits. Emma Tauiliili, Madyson Barton, and Erin Wicker followed with two hits a piece while Natalie Wilson, Madison Cox, Kenlee Cole, and Katie Wimer each knocked out a hit. Those scoring runs for the Lady Cardinals were Wells (3), Tauiliili (2), Wilson (1), Sarah Wimer (1), Cox (1), Cole (1), K.Wimer (1), and Wicker (1). Natalie Wilson led the RBI column with three followed by two a piece for Emma Tauiliili and Erin Wicker, and one each for Madyson Barton, Mattie Wells, Madison Cox, and Katie Wimer.
Erin Wicker kept her early season consistency and fired her first career no hitter at the high school level. Wicker pitched all five innings allowing just one unearned run and striking out three.
