The Wabash Chapter, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, held a Vietnam Era Commemorative event that was hosted by the Carmi VFW Post 3851 immediately after the Memorial Service at the Carmi city park on May 28, 2018. Keith Brooks, a Vietnam Veteran, was MC, and gave a short speech about the veterans when they returned home after the war. Diane Harvey, of Carmi, sang a lovely a cappella rendition of “The National Anthem” and received an ovation.
Dorotha Thackrey, DAR veterans chair, read the names of 59 veterans as Marjorie Brown, DAR Viceregent, distributed packets to the veterans. Included in each packet were certificates from the chapter, President Donald J Trump’s proclamation, lapel pins, and Vietnam bumper stickers from the Commemoration. Lowell and Dorotha Thackrey donated 4” x 6” flags that were made in the USA.
A memorial service was held for four departed veterans Darrell Hankins, Tom McCord, John Edward O’Daniel and Oscar Eugene Trout. Candles were lit in their memory. Surviving spouse pins and certificates were presented to Debra McCord, Barbara O’Daniel and Linda Trout. Glenda Hankins was regretfully unable to attend.
A husband and wife team, Jimmie and Patricia Mills, were asked to come together to receive their pins, having met in the service. One veteran in a wheel chair received an ovation when he got out of his chair as his name was called, and struggled across the room. A compassionate veteran came and steadied him while he continued walking to receive his pin.
Everyone sang “God Bless America” a cappella followed by sandwiches and condiments served by the VFW Auxiliary to the 135-150 attendees.
A special note: Roy Franklin McCord, while in the Navy, went into Vietnam as helmsman of Inshore PCF10. On September 4, 1969 on the BoDe River in the Cau Mau Penninsula, they came under VietCong aggressors. Severely wounded, Roy saved the crew and the craft from more serious casualties. His courage, devotion to duty, professionalism and responsibility, was awarded the Silver Star Medal from the President of the United States.
