"The 36 lives lost at the Lasalle Veterans Home was one of the many tragedies to unfold in our state over the last two years. Failures occurred in every branch of government in response to COVID, but nowhere were the failures more apparent than within our Department of Health. This administrative agency was woefully unprepared to address the demands of the pandemic, notwithstanding the overall survival rate for those contracting COVID was quite high. It was apparent earl)\ on that our elderly citizens within congregate facilities were the most at risk, but in late 2020 when this tragedy at Lasalle unfolded, our Department of Health was more focused on closing small businesses and isolating school children, all of which wreaked havoc on our economy, as well as harmed our children's mental health and overall development.
