Every year, the Summer Reading program at the library invites a park ranger from Rend Lake to conduct a program during the month. Elise Ratcliff, a fairly new ranger, outdid all others this year, bringing worms; Scout, an Eastern Tiger salamander; a Tarantula spider named Peaches; and “Sid” the corn snake. She had fascinating facts about the habits of each one to tell the children and even fed the salamander one of the worms, to the great interest of the group.
“Sid” and “Scout” evidently had no problem being handled by the ranger and the children, for the most part, enjoyed being allowed to pet them.
The second week of Summer Reading was attended by 34 children. The program encourages and rewards kids for reading books.
