The Norris City-Omaha-Enfield Lady Cardinal softball team played host to the Pope County Lady Pirates Tuesday afternoon in a Greater Egyptian Conference matchup.
The Lady Pirates got on the board first when they put together two first inning hits to push one run across the plate. NCOE threatened in the bottom half of the first inning when Madyson Barton led off with a double followed by a sacrifice bunt by Mattie Wells to advance Barton to third base, but the Pope County defense would collect the final two outs holding the Lady Cardinals scoreless. The score would remain at 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth inning when Natalie Wilson would take matters into her own hands and blast a solo home run over the center field fence to knot the contest at 1-all. The Lady Pirates removed the tie when they pushed another run across the plate in the top of the fifth inning to claim the 2-1 advantage. NCOE would threaten several times in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings but the Lady Pirates would step up on the defensive end and hold the Lady Cardinals scoreless the remainder of the way. The Lady Cardinal defense would fall apart in the top of the sixth and seventh innings and commit eight errors to allow the Lady Pirates nine unearned runs. This defensive meltdown found the Lady Cardinals falling by the final score of 11-1.
Natalie Wilson and Kenlee Cole led the NCOE offense with two hits a piece while Madyson Barton, Haleigh Poole, Madison Cox, and Katie Wimer each added on hit. Wilson scored the lone run and collected the only RBI in the game.
Erin Wicker deserved much better fate in the circle for the Lady Cardinals (8-7 overall, 6-4 GEC) as she hurled five innings allowing 2 runs on eight hits and striking out two. Madyson Barton relieved Wicker to fire two innings allowing nine runs (all unearned) on one hit and striking out two.
