Mike Ray addressed the Norris City Village board on Monday night, stating that Norris City Industries was kicking off the Village’s sesquicentennial by minting commemorative coins. Ray passed out $10 bronze coins to all the board members and the media. Silver/nickel coins will also be available for $20. Ray asked the board to be thinking about events to mark the year, such as a beard-growing contest, a bonnet contest, and dressing in period costumes.
“Norris City has been here 150 years. Let’s try to celebrate it,” Ray said.
Ed Oliver also asked the board about appointing someone to spearhead the planning for a celebration and putting a committee together. The original plat for Norris City was filed in the White County Courthouse on August 17, 1871.
