With all the ugliness we are witnessing in this election cycle, there has been one race that stands out to us. It is the election of the Illinois Supreme Court Judge in southern IL. This race has two candidates, Republican David Overstreet and Democrat Judy Cates. Valinda and I have been intimately involved in several gun rights judicial cases over the years including the cases that did away with the handgun ownership ban in Chicago and the case that ultimately forced the General Assembly to pass concealed carry.
We know judges and the importance of getting the right judge. This race has been marred by unprecedented mudslinging by the Cates campaign. This type of attack is not usually seen in judicial campaigns as these campaigns are expected to exhibit at least some modicum of decorum and the judicial temperament you would expect from a judge. We have explored her accusations and found them highly inaccurate and extremely unprofessional and well beneath what we would expect from anyone seeking the highest judicial position in the state! The fact that Judy Cates would even publicly discuss a pending or impending case and risk tainting the case should disqualify her from the bench. Furthermore, in our opinion, to twist and misrepresent the case as she has done should be reason to remove her law license altogether.
We know Judge Overstreet and know he is a fine man and a fine judge. The very fact that he refuses to sling mud back at her during this campaign speaks to his character. He is a good judge and will serve southern Illinois well as District 5 representative on the Illinois Supreme Court.
