The Norris City-Omaha-Enfield Lady Cardinal softball team was going after their seventh consecutive victory Tuesday afternoon when they welcomed the Webber Lady Trojans to town.
Pitching started out strong for both teams as neither team was able to score a run in the first two innings of play. This scoreless streak came to an end in the the third inning when the Lady Trojans were able to strike first due to some faulty defense on the part of the Lady Cardinals. Webber was able to take the 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third inning but this lead was very short lived when the Lady Cardinal offense came alive and belted out 13 hits which managed to plate 11 runs to give NCOE the 11-3 lead. Appearing to have things in control at this time, the Lady Cardinals managed to quickly let the Lady Trojans right back into the game in the top of the fourth inning when they allowed Webber to cross the plate seven times to bring the score to 11-10. NCOE was unable to score in the bottom of the fourth leaving the game at a one run Lady Cardinal advantage. This lead was eliminated in the top of the fifth inning when Webber managed to put together four more runs to go back in front 14-11. NCOE answered back in the bottom of the fifth inning with two runs of their own to narrow the gap to 14-13 but two consecutive shutout innings from both teams kept that score intact and NCOE fell for the first time in seven games.
Haleigh Poole was the leader on the offensive end as she knocked out a team high four hits in the game. Emma Tauiliili, Madyson Barton, Natalie Wilson, and Madison Cox followed closely with three hits a piece followed by two hits each from Mattie Wells, Kenlee Cole, and Katie Wimer along with one hit from Erin Wicker. Poole also led the RBI category with three followed by two each from Wilson, Cole, and Cox, and one a piece for Tauiliili, Barton, K.Wimer, and Wicker. Those scoring runs in the game were Emma Tauiliili (2), Madyson Barton (2), Natalie Wilson (2), Haleigh Poole (2), Mattie Wells (2), Madison Cox (1), Katie Wimer (1), and Erin Wicker (1).
Erin Wicker was the starting pitcher for the Lady Cardinals (6-3) going 3 2/3 innings allowing nine runs (three earned) on seven hits and striking out three. Madyson Barton relieved Wicker to hurl the final 3 1/3 innings allowing five runs (one earned) on nine hits.
