The Lady Cardinal softball team played host the Pope County Lady Pirates Thursday afternoon in a Greater Egyptian Conference match up. Pitching was strong for both teams throughout the first three innings as both teams threatened but would manage nary a run. This scoreless streak would end in the top of the fourth inning when the Lady Cardinal defense would falter and allow seven unearned runs after collecting two quick outs in the inning. NCOE would regroup and manage to keep the Lady Pirates scoreless the next two innings but once again in the top of the seventh inning the Lady Cardinal defense would suffer their second meltdown of the game following two quick outs as they allowed two more unearned runs, to find themselves trailing by nine runs with just three more outs to surrender in the contest. Although the Lady Cardinals would threaten, as they had several times in the game, they would only manage to score one run as they fell by the final score of 9-1. The Lady Cardinals stranded 11 runners on the base path.
Haleigh Poole, Shaylyn Mayberry, and Madyson Barton each collected a team high two hits followed by one hit apiece for Natalie Wilson, Ally Black (triple), Jenn’na Wurst, and Mattie Wells. Wurst scored the team’s lone run while Mayberry collected the RBI.
Ally Black was the starting pitcher for the Lady Cardinals as she hurled 3 2/3 innings, allowing seven unearned runs on eight hits and striking out five. Caite Weiss relieved Black to throw the remainder of the game, allowing two unearned runs on six hits and striking out two.
