The Norris City-Omaha-Enfield Lady Cardinal softball team ventured to Carrier Mills Tuesday afternoon to take on the Lady Wildcats in Little Greater Egyptian Conference play. Although the Lady Cardinals out slugged Carrier Mills 14-5, defense and base running were not bright spots as NCOE fell by the final score of 13-6.
First inning action started out favorable for the Lady Cardinals as they jumped out to the early 3-0 advantage in the top half of the inning. However, the Lady Wildcats wasted little time in claiming their first lead of the game as they erupted for five first inning runs to go in front of NCOE 5-3. The Lady Cardinals would manage to tie the game at 5-all in the top of the third inning but Carrier Mills would manage to recapture the lead, 6-5, in the bottom of the third inning after they plated one run of their own. This would be a lead the Lady Wildcats would not relinquish as they went on to hand the Lady Cardinals the seven run loss.
Bree Vollman, Mercedes Hise, and Hollan Everrett led the team with three hits a piece while Avery Black followed closely with two hits. Brynn Warren, Lauren Poole, and Elise Hortin each added one hit in the contest. Black led the team with two RBI’s while Everrett and Poole added one a piece. Those scoring runs for the Lady Cardinals were Mercedes Hise (2), Hollan Everrett (2), Bree Vollman (1), and Elise Hortin (1).
Starting pitcher, Mercedes Hise, pitched 5 1/3 innings allowing 13 runs (nine earned) on just five hits along with striking out seven. Brynn Warren relieved Hise in the sixth inning to hurl the final 2/3 inning allowing no runs on no hits and striking out one.
