The Norris City-Omaha-Enfield Lady Cardinal softball team returned to action Monday afternoon when they traveled to Grayville to take on the Lady Bison. Following a week layoff due to Spring Break, it was no surprise the Lady Cardinals looked a bit sluggish in areas.
Although the Lady Cardinals had been idle for over a week they wasted little time in hitting the scoreboard Monday when they knocked out three first inning hits to grasp the early 3-0 lead. The bottom of the first inning found the Lady Bison threatening as they loaded the bases but good defense and lights out pitching eliminated the threat and kept the Lady Bison at bay. The Lady Cardinals would manage to get runners into scoring position in the second inning but the Lady Bison would return the favor and hold NCOE scoreless and manage to answer back with two runs of their own in the bottom half to narrow the Lady Cardinal lead to just one run, 3-2. This score would stand until the bottom of the fourth inning when Grayville would add a run to tie the game at 3-all. NCOE responded nicely to this as they stormed back with two more runs of their own in the top of the fifth to extend their lead to 5-3 This two run advantage quickly shrunk to one when the Lady Bison managed to plate another run in the bottom of the fifth inning. A lead off walk to Emma Tauiliili in the top of the sixth inning proved costly for the Lady Bison as Madyson Barton would sacrifice her to second and Natalie Wilson would come through with a base hit to score Tauililli to give the Lady Cardinals a two run lead once again. The score would remain at 6-4 until the bottom of the seventh inning when the Lady Bison would rally back with another run but this would be all Grayville could manage as the defense stepped up with some big catches in the outfield and Erin Wicker would fan the final batter to secure the 6-5 Lady Cardinal victory.
Madison Cox led the NCOE offense as she was credited with a team high four hits. Natalie Wilson and Mattie Wells followed with two hits apiece while Haleigh Poole and Kenlee Cole each added one hit. Cox and Cole would top the Lady Cardinals with two RBI’s each along with one a piece from Wilson and Wells. Those scoring runs in the game were Haleigh Poole (2), Mattie Wells (2), Emma Tauiliili (1), and Natalie Wilson (1).
Erin Wicker picked up another victory in the circle as she allowed five runs (three earned) on nine hits and struck out five. This win moves the Lady Cardinals to 6-2 on the season.
