The NCOE Lady Cardinal softball team kicked off their 2019 campaign Thursday afternoon when they ventured to Fairfield to take on the Lady Colts.
The Lady Cardinals got off to a good start in the first inning when leadoff hitter, Mercedes Hise, ripped a single to center field to later score on an RBI single by Mallory Hobbs giving NCOE the early 1-0 lead. Fairfield answered back in the bottom of the first, with three runs to sway the score in their favor 3-1. Second inning action would find Mallory Fulkerson scoring on an RBI single by Carmyn Daugherty to narrow the Fairfield lead to 3-2. As the Lady Colts came to bat in the bottom of the second inning, they managed to take advantage of quite a few mental lapses by the Lady Cardinals to stretch their lead to 10-2. The Lady Cardinals would plate another run in the top of the fourth inning when Avery Black would collect an RBI single that would score Mattie McArthy, to narrow the Lady Colt lead. This, however, was all NCOE could muster the remainder of the game as they fell by the final score of 13-3.
Carmyn Daugherty led the Lady Cardinals in the game with two hits, followed by one hit each from Mercedes Hise, Avery Black, Mallory Hobbs, Sydnee Sauls, and Lauren Poole. Those scoring one run apiece for NCOE were Mercedes Hise, Mallory Fulkerson, Mattie McArthy. Daugherty, Black, and Hobbs were each credited with an RBI.
Starting pitcher Mercedes Hise fired four innings, allowing 12 runs (five earned) on eight hits while striking out five. Avery Black relieved Hise to finish the game, allowing one unearned run.
The Lady Cardinals (0-1) will be back in action Monday at home when they welcome the Grayville Lady Bison to town.
