Friday, Sept. 14, the Jr. Varsity Cardinals traveled to Gallatin County to compete in their conference tournament.
“It is designated a Fresh/Soph tournament but we had told all the other schools that we had to play juniors and they were ok with that,” Coach Cathy Black said.
First, the Cardinals faced a strong Carrier Mills squad. It was 9-9 before the Cardinals pulled away to go ahead 19-9. They won that set 25-18 and the second 25-17.
“The girls moved and talked well,” said Black.
After sitting one match and watching Crab Orchard come back to beat Carrier Mills in three, the Cards took their turn to play Crab.
Again, it was a close match for the first few points and then NCOE took off to win 25-12. The second set was closer, but the Cards had watched Crab Orchard come back on Carrier Mills, and they didn’t let that happen.
The two wins moved NCOE into the Championship game to play Galatia.
“We hadn’t seen Galatia play so it was a learn-as-we-go match,” Black stated. “The Bearcats could not handle our serving and we played good defense to take away Galatia’s hits,” she added. The combo of the two allowed the cards to win 25-14, 25-12.
“The team is starting to transition well and its beginning to pay off,” Coach Black said.
At the serving line Kilee Roser led with 20 points, as Tori Karnes had 19 and Erin Wicker 18. Hallie Roper added 16 points with Meagan Healy serving 12 and Abby Black 8.
Offensively, Healy led with 18 kills and Roper had 15. Jadyn Ash had 14 with Roser adding 7 and Black one.
Defensively, Black had 30 digs and Healy followed with 20. Eleven digs apiece were recorded by Karnes and Roser and Wicker added six. Ash had 4 blocks and Roper had one.
The wins moved the JV to 7-4 and gave them the Conference Tournament Championship.
