The 8th Grade Varsity Volleyball team entered their Regional Tournament on Thursday, March 14, with a big match up waiting for them at host Gallatin County.
If they got past Gallatin Co. for the fifth time, they most likely would face a strong Fairfield squad in the finals.
And that was just what happened.
“We did not overlook Gallatin, but we did anticipate playing Fairfield again,” Coach Jaclyn Melton said.
After beating Gallatin County 25-11, 25-8, the Cardinals took on Fairfield who had beaten the squad twice. And when the Cards fell behind 1-6 and then 3-10, it began to look like the Mules would do it again. But the NCOE squad didn’t panic and took their control back, and finally pulled back into a tie. From that point, the score went back and forth until the Cards prevailed 27-25.
That win rattled the Mules, and the Cards jumped out to a 9-1 lead, holding off a late try by the Mules to win 25-20.
“Winning the way we did, and against Fairfield, made this win even more special,” Melton beamed.
Bree Vollman led the scoring on the night with 18 points, followed by Morgan Bryant with 13 and Brynn Warren with 10. Hollan Everett and Jerra Barton added 8 points each. Miah Scroggins had 7 and Avery Black 5.
Everett finished with 25 kills to lead the offense and Scroggins added 7, Vollman 6 and Lydia Vineyard one. Vollman had 24 assists to lead the setting, as Bryant had 6 and Barton4. One assist each was set by Scroggins, Everett and Black.
Defensively, Barton had 11 digs and Warren 10 digs to lead. Scroggins had 5 and Vollman 3. Bryant, Everett and Vineyard had 2 each, and Black one. Everett had two blocks.
The win gave the NCOE Cardinals the Regional Championship and a 20-4 season record!
