The NCOE Junior High cross country team set out on their first meet of the season Friday night at the Fairfield Invitational which included runners from the following schools: Fairfield, Olney, St. Joe Olney, New Hope, Geff and Flora. Each race consisted of approximately 30-plus runners. The Cardinals have been putting in some hard work to get prepared for the season in the last few weeks and it definitely paid off.
The races began with the varsity girls race. Bree Vollman led the way for NCOE and Ebany Jolley was very close behind. They would finish in 3rd and 5th place with times of 12:35 and 12:37 on the 1.8 mile course. Kate Bond was also a medalist by finishing in the top ten. She finished in 9th place in the race with a time of 13:51. Lydia Vinyard and Amanda Bradley came close to the medal ranks finishing 11th and 13th with times of 14:24 and 14:31. With such great running, the girls would go on to take 1st place in the meet with a team score of 41. While the next two schools were St. Joe Olney, 47 points, and Olney 50 points.
The next race would feature the varsity boys race. NCOE had 9 strong runners in the race. Preston Long bolted out in front of the pack early. He would go on to finish in 5th place with a time of 10:50. Hunter Mayberry and Caleb Prather also landed in the top ten to receive medals. They finished 7th and 10th with times of 10:58 and 11:23 The rest of the team put on a great showing with them placing and finishing with the following times: Mason Johnson: 12th place- 11:37, Joel Hortin: 19th place- 12:24, Lane Connaway: 21st place- 12:33, Jaden Simmons: 23rd place- 12:37, Braden Mendoza: 24th place- 12:38, and Stryder Ramsey: 30th place- 14:15. The Cards finished with a team score of 53 points in 3rd place behind Olney- 29 points and St. Joe Olney- 51 points.
For the final race the junior varsity boys and girls ran simultaneously on the 1.3 mile course. For most of NCOE’s runners this was their first time running in competition. In this race, the top five girls and the top five boys received a medal. For the girls, the top finisher and sole medalist was Mattie McArthy who finished 5th with a time of 8:07. The rest of the girls performed very well and finished as follows: Kate Vollman: 9th place- 8:44, Reagan Goebel: 10th place- 8:47, Aaliya Robinson: 11th place- 8:50, Finlee Hite: 12th place- 9:01, Trinity Boyd: 15th place- 9:12, Cora Humphrey: 17th place- 9:15, Alexis Rush: 18th place- 9:36, Amelia Douglas: 20th place- 9:42, Olivia Sutton: 21st place- 9:43, Cadee Humphrey: 27th place- 11:07..
Greyson Goebel was the sole medalist for the JV boys coming in 5th place with a time of 7:52. The rest of the boys finished as follows: Max Riggs: 9th place- 8:24, Brody Warren: 15th place- 9:14, Jaxen Simmons: 22nd place- 10:20, and Kaygen Basinger: 24th place- 11:20.
The NCOE squad will be running at two meets in the next week. The first meet will be at our very own Dave Gray Invitational here at the NCOE High School on Thursday, September 13th at 4:30. Then the Cards will race at the Harrisburg Invitational next Tuesday, September 18 at 4:00. Come out and show these guys and gals some support for their efforts.
