Monday afternoon found the Norris City-Omaha-Enfield Lady Cardinal softball team playing their final regular season game at home against the Wayne City Lady Indians. After dropping their last four contests, the Lady Cardinals were in hopes of getting back to their winning ways to assure themselves a winning record for the season.
Action started out uncertain for the Lady Cardinals when the first two batters reached base, but pitcher, Erin Wicker, settled down and promptly retired the next three batters via strikeout to end the threat. The bottom half of the first inning would witness the first three batters being retired via strikeout as well to leave the game scoreless thus far. Second inning action would start to find the NCOE bats coming alive as they knocked out five hits and plated three runs to claim the early 3-0 lead. Wayne City would strike for their first run in the top of the third inning to narrow the lead to 3-1 but the Lady Cardinals erupted for an eight run inning in the bottom of the third inning to extend their advantage to 10 runs. They would follow this up with five more runs in the bottom of the fourth to stretch their lead to 14. Wayne City would manage to score one more run in the top of the fifth inning but that is all the damage NCOE would allow as they returned to the win column with a 15-2 short game victory.
Kenlee Cole was perfect at the plate and led the Lady Cardinals with three hits in the game. Madyson Barton, Mattie Wells, Natalie Wilson, Emma Tauiliili, Haleigh Poole, and Erin Wicker each knocked out two hits along with one from Katie Wimer. Wells led the team with three RBI’s followed by Barton and Wilson with two each, and one a piece for Tauiliili, Cole, and K.Wimer. Those scoring runs in the contest were Kenlee Cole (3), Madyson Barton (2), Mattie Wells (2), Haleigh Poole (2), Emma Tauiliili (2), Erin Wicker (2), Katie Wimer (1), and Gracie Howard (1).
Erin Wicker collected the victory in the circle hurling five innings and allowing two runs on five hits while striking out six.
The Lady Cardinals (9- 7) will be back in action Wednesday, May 15, when they travel to Elkville to take on the Crab Orchard Lady Trojans in the first round of the IHSA Class 1A Regional Tournament.
