Thursday afternoon found the Norris City-Omaha-Enfield Fighting Cardinal baseball team venturing to Golconda to take on the Pope County Pirates in Greater Egyptian Conference play.
Action started out sluggish for both teams on the offensive end as neither team was able to score a run in the first inning of action. This slow start did not last for NCOE as they came alive in the second inning to push two runs across the plate and grab a 2-0 lead. This two run game would quickly stretch to four when the Fighting Cardinals pushed two more runs across the plate in the third inning. The Pirates would finally respond with a run of their own in the bottom half of the third inning but that would be all the offense Pope County would manage to muster in this contest as pitcher Wade Sauls would have commanding control on the hill. This strong pitching and nearly flawless defense by the Fighting Cardinals would manage to hold the Pirates scoreless for the remaining four innings. With this stellar defense, it was easy for the offense to remain effective as they added eight more runs in the final four innings of play to claim the 12-1 victory.
Brandon Skaggs led the offense for NCOE (4-3 overall, 4-1 GEC) as he ripped out a team high four hits in the game. Following with three hits for the Fighitng Cardinals were Jack Riggs, Trey Simmons, and Ty Lane while Lucas Browning and Bryce Jolley would add two hits each and CJ Richardson and Jacob Richerson would add one hit a piece. Simmons topped the team with three RBI’s while Skaggs and Lane would add two each followed by one from Riggs, Richardson, and Richerson. Those scoring runs in the game were Jack Riggs (2), Lucas Browning (2), Bryce Jolley (2), Austin Brinkley (1), Jacob Richerson (1), CJ Richardson (1), Trey Simmons (1), Brandon Skaggs (1), and Nathaniel Wilson (1).
Wade Sauls came up big for NCOE as he went the distance on the hill allowing just one run on seven hits and striking out 10.
