On Tuesday afternoon, the Norris City-Omaha-Enfield Fighting Cardinals welcomed the Carrier Mills Wildcats to town for a Greater Egyptian Conference matchup.
First inning action would find the Wildcats striking first when they jumped out to the early 1-0 lead. This lead would stand until the bottom of the second inning, when the NCOE bats came to life and managed to push three runs across the plate to take their first lead of the game at 3-1. Carrier Mills would plate one run in the top of the third inning to cut into the Fighting Cardinal lead at 3-2. NCOE, however, managed to stretch their advantage out to three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning when the Fighting Cardinals scored two more runs. The Wildcats would once again cut the NCOE lead to two runs when they scored again in the top of the fifth inning, but the Fighting Cardinals answered back in the bottom of the sixth inning with a run of their own to push their lead back to three runs. Although the Wildcats would push another run across the plate in the top of the seventh inning, the Fighting Cardinal defense would step up and shut Carrier Mills down, to claim the 6-4 victory.
Nathaniel Wilson led the offense for NCOE as he pounded out four hits in four attempts. Brandon Skaggs followed closely with three hits and Jack Riggs, Trey Simmons, CJ Richardson, Bryce Jolley, and Jacob Richerson added one hit a piece. Simmons crossed the plate two times for the Fighting Cardinals, followed by one each for Richardson, Jolley, Richerson, and Austin Brinkley. Brandon Skaggs topped the team with four RBI’s while Bryce Jolley added one.
Wade Sauls picked up the victory on the mound as he hurled five innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits and striking out nine. Sauls gave way to Trey Simmons in the sixth inning, and Simmons fired the final two innings, allowing one run on one hit and striking out five.
