The NCOE Fighting Cardinal baseball team jumped into IHSA Class 1A Regional Baseball Tournament play Thursday afternoon when they played host to the Galatia Bearcats. With two wins already under their belts against the Bearcats thus far this season, the Fighting Cardinals were hoping to make it three.
Action started out a little scary for the Fighting Cardinals when they found themselves facing a three run deficit following half of an inning of play. NCOE, however, answered back in the bottom of the first inning with a run of their own to narrow the Bearcat lead to just 3-1. Another run in the bottom of the second inning inched the Fighting Cardinals even closer at 3-2. After holding the Bearcats scoreless again in the top of the third inning a monstrous four run inning in the bottom of the third inning gave NCOE their first lead of the contest. This would be a lead the Fighting Cardinals would never relinquish as they added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to go on to claim the 9-3 victory.
Brandon Skaggs collected a team high three hits to lead the Fighting Cardinal offense. Jack Riggs, Lucas Browning, Ty Lane, and CJ Richardson followed closely with two hits a piece along with one hit from Trey Simmons. Browning topped all players with four RBI’s followed by Lane with two, and one for Skaggs. Those scoring runs for NCOE were Brandon Skaggs (2), Jack Riggs (2), Lucas Browning (2), Trey Simmons (1), Austin Brinkley (1), CJ Richardson (1).
Ty Lane received the start on the bump for NCOE and he came through big, as he allowed just three runs on six hits while striking out three in his six innings of work. Wade Sauls came in to pitch the final inning and he allowed nary a hit nor run while collecting two strikeouts.
