The Norris City-Omaha-Enfield Lady Cardinal softball team was hoping to complete the week of play without a blemish when they headed to Crab Orchard Thursday to take on the defending Class S State Champion Lady Trojans.
NCOE jumped out to the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning but quickly surrendered a run to their opponent in the bottom half to leave the score knotted at 1-all. The Lady Cardinals responded with two more runs in the second inning and one more in the third inning to extend their lead to three runs, 4-1. At this time, Lady Trojans would manage to cut into the Lady Cardinal lead when they scored another run in the bottom of the third inning to bring the score to 4-2. NCOE stretched the lead back to three runs when they pushed another run across in the top of the fourth inning to extend their lead to 5-2 but that would be all the damage the Lady Cardinals would be able to do for at this time their bats became stagnant. This on top of a lagging defense would witness the Lady Trojans plating a run in each of the remaining innings to tie the game at 5-all and force extra innings. This eighth inning found the Lady Cardinals coming alive as they had runners reach second and third but the Lady Trojan defense stepped up to end the threat. The Lady Cardinals would come within one out of forcing a ninth inning but the aggressive base running of Crab Orchard forced yet another defensive blunder for NCOE which allowed the winning run to cross the plate. This 6-5 loss leaves NCOE at 4-2 on the season and 1-1 in Little Greater Egyptian Conference play.
Mercedes Hise led the way with two hits followed by one each from Avery Black and Elise Hortin. Carmyn Daugherty collected the lone RBI for NCOE and those scoring runs were Daugherty (1), Hise (1), Mallory Hobbs (1), Hortin (1), and Trinity Boyd (1).
Mercedes Hise deserved a much better fate as she went the distance for the Lady Cardinals allowing six runs (three earned) on just four hits and striking out 10.
