Erwin Spencer Barbre, 74, of Westcliffe, CO, passed away on Thursday, July 6, 2017 at his residence in Benton, KY. He was born July 15, 1942 in East St. Louis, IL the son of Noah E. and Doris Lucille (Spencer) Barbre. Erv married Jayne Yorke Butler on December 21, 1963.
Erv was a January 1960 graduate of East St. Louis Senior High School. He received his Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Washington University in St. Louis in 1964, and received his Juris Doctor degree in 1967 from the Washington University School of Law, where he was Editor of the Law Review.
Erv was a distinguished member of the legal publishing community, having worked in a management capacity at Lawyer’s Co-Operative Publishing (Rochester, NY), Research Institute of America (Washington, D.C.), Bancroft-Whitney Publishing (San Francisco, CA), Shepherd’s (Colorado Springs, CO), and the West Group (Egan, MN).
Erv was a keen fan of horse racing where he was part owner of Barbre Stables, and a life-long supporter of the St. Louis Cardinals. A loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Erv will be dearly missed.
Erv is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jayne; son, Erwin S. “Chip” Barbre, Jr., of Kansas City, MO; daughter, Rebecca Jayne Pickett, of O’Fallon, IL; brother, Ronald D. (Gloria) Barbre of Webster Groves, MO; three grandchildren, Lillian, Lucinda and Lincoln Pickett. He was preceded in death by his parents, Noah and Doris Barbre, a brother, Gary Dean Barbre and a sister, Doris Ann Barbre.
Funeral services to celebrate the life of Erwin Spencer Barbre, 74, of Westcliffe, CO, will be at 12:00 p.m., Saturday, July 15, 2017 at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi. Burial will be in Stokes Chapel Cemetery in Crossville. Visitation will be held after 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 15, 2017 at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Erv’s memory to Colorado Horse Rescue, 10386 N. 65th St., Longmont, CO 80503, www.chr.org and will be accepted at Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi.
