Hello, News Around Enfield
The calendar shows Spring is here, but I don’t think Winter is done yet. I think the two seasons are fighting, but eventually Spring will win. Don’t give up! Lots of Spring signs such as Easter flowers or Daffodils, as some people call them, are blooming. Some of the trees are budding and some blooming. The beautiful green grass can be seen everywhere. It is gonna be a great year!
Things are going pretty good on the farm. The cows are still looking to get their bellies full of good green grass, and the first baby calf arrived today. It is solid black and very cute. And yes, the chicken girls know about spring and they think it is time to hatch babies. I got two Maran chickens gone broody, (meaning wanting to set on eggs and hatch babies), but the answer is NO, as we have enough chickens right now.
I kinda got Spring fever myself as I am ready to get the garden growing and plant some flowers. I have lettuce up and the rhubarb is sticking its head through the ground. Come on Spring, we are ready for some good fresh vegetables.

A Tribute to my Step-Dad,
Hugh Swafford Hugh Swafford 95, of Enfield passed away at the Enfield Healthcare. Hugh married my mother, Betty and they lived in Enfield. Hugh and Mom enjoyed boating and fishing, raising a garden and watching the Chicago Cubs games. Mom got sick and passed away in 1993. Hugh took very good care of her when she was sick, and our family is very grateful for his care.
Hugh loved to grow big gardens, especially tomatoes. At one time he had 100 tomato plants and gave the extra to his family and neighbors. They also had lots of fish dinners for friends and family. I can still taste the good fish and mom’s homemade potato salad. No one could make it like she could.
Hugh worked for the Village of Enfield for a while after moving to Enfield. When his health declined and his eye sight was not good, he got a golf cart to get around town. He got his groceries at The Food Shoppe where his friends Lee Ann and Amanda helped him shop. He also rode his cart to the General Baptist Church where he attended. He fell and broke his hip and then had to go to the Enfield Healthcare. He always wanted to go back home, but was not able. While at the nursing home, he made lots of friends. The nurses who cared for him loved him so much. A Special Thank You for the good care he received while there.
Hugh is survived by five daughters, Brenda (David) Fields and Myra (George) Roth of Mt Vernon, Ill. Lois (Donnie) Duckworth and Cindy (JP) Williams of Enfield. Ruth (Todd) Northdorf of Florissant, Mo.; one son Ronnie (Elaine) Gardner of Barnhill, ll. Two Brothers, John and Ronnie and several grand and great grand children also survive. Services were held on April 9, 2018 at Stendeback Funeral Home in Enfield and burial in Enfield Cemetery.

As many of you know my brother, Ronnie “Oopie” Gardner, has been very sick and was in the Intensive Care Unit at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis for over a week. He has been losing blood and the doctors have yet to determine the cause. Today he got moved to a regular room on the 10th floor. He is better but very weak and has a ways to go. Prayers for his recovery would be appreciated. Thank you from our family!
