The Fighting Cardinal Baseball team got their week underway Monday afternoon out of conference play when the Eldorado Eagles came to town.
This contest started out as a defensive battle as neither team could plate a run in the first inning of play. This drought came to an end in the top of the second inning when the Eagles struck for three runs to take the first lead of the game. NCOE cut into this Eagle lead in the bottom of the second inning when they pushed their first run across the plate to narrow the Eagle lead to just two runs. NCOE held Eldorado scoreless in the third inning and went on an offensive run in the bottom half as they plated two runs to tie the game at three all. This 3-3 score remained until the sixth inning when the Eagle bats came to life and drove in five runs to take the lead back at 8-3. The Eagles scored two more in the seventh and held the Fighting Cardinals scoreless to hand NCOE the 10-3 loss.
CJ Richardson and Ty Lane would lead the NCOE offense with two hits each while Jack Riggs, Brandon Skaggs, and Lucas Browning would each knock out one. Lane collected two of the teams three RBI’s while Richardson gathered the other one. Those scoring runs for the Fighting Cardinals were Brandon Skaggs, Lucas Browning, and Ty Lane.
Starting pitcher, Wade Sauls, hurled the first 3 2/3 innings of the game allowing three runs on four hits and striking out four. Nathaniel Wilson relieved Sauls in the fourth inning which would mark the first time the youngster had appeared on the mound since his season ending injury the previous season. Wilson would go on to fire the next 1 2/3 innings allowing three runs on three hits and striking out one. Trey Simmons would be the final NCOE pitcher of the day when he relieved Wilson to pitch the final 1 2/3 innings. Simmons would find four unearned runs crossing the plate on three hits and striking out one.
