Letter to the Editor: Oil is a little-known but integral staple of the Land of Lincoln

June 16, 2025 by Kathy Sands

By Seth Whitehead
Nearly four billion barrels of oil have been produced in Illinois since commercial production began way back in 1905.

Pump jacks are as common — albeit spread out — in southeastern Illinois as skyscrapers are to Chicago.

Still, millions of Illinoisans have no idea there are oil wells in the state. And many of those who are aware of Illinois’ storied oil production history may not know key facts about the present-day industry that distinguish it from the “Big Oil” stereotype that is so prevalent today.

Over the decades, Illinois has risen to the status of being the country’s third-largest oil producing state on two occasions (1907-1912 and 1940). The state’s production even outpaced Iran and Iraq’s combined production in 1940, and Illinois oil production literally helped fuel the Allied Forces defeat of the Axis Powers in World War II.

Opinion: Dog Killer or Cancer Faker…Which is Worse?

May 29, 2025 by Villagers Voice

Submitted by Rich Gurka

Based on some fine reporting by J.C. Tinsley, as was posted recently on the WROY-WRUL website, it seems that recently appointed Wayne County Assistant State’s Attorney Rhonda Blades- Dinn MAY NOT face any criminal charges stemming from an incident which occurred on September 26, 2023 in Carmi, Illinois. Simply ‘Google” “Rhonda Blades-Dinn, Carmi, Il.” and you can research for yourself what I am talking about.

Strangely, Tinsley’s reporting of the facts on his several online articles have clouded the issue of who ACTUALLY shot and killed her dog. Read Tinsley’s reports VERY CAREFULLY and you will see what I’m talking about. It seems that Rhonda had shot her dog multiple times but did NOT kill the dog. [Read more...]

Opinion: Illinois Oil, A Little-Known Land of Lincoln Staple

May 13, 2025 by Kathy Sands

Submitted by Seth Whitehead, Executive Director Illinois Petroleum Resources Board

Nearly four billion barrels of oil have been produced in Illinois since commercial production began way back in 1905. Pump jacks are as common - albeit spread out - in southeastern Illinois as skyscrapers are to Chicago. Still, millions of Illinoisans have no idea there are oil wells in the state. The state’s production even outpaced Iran and Iraq’s combined production in 1940, and Illinois oil production literally helped fuel the Allied Forces defeat of the Axis Powers in World War II. For decades, publicly traded giants like ExxonMobil and Texaco dominated production in the Land of Lincoln. [Read more...]

Opinion: Carmi internet service scam?

February 14, 2025 by Villagers Voice

By Rich Gurka

Apparently, the Illinois State Police are investigating some type of possible internet service scam in the Carmi and Epworth areas of White County. From what I have been able to ascertain, this may have begun when an individual created a rather low powered wifi ‘hotspot’ at the Carmi Municipal Airport. Then, several households located near the Carmi airport were allegedly able to access this system, enabling them to access internet service. [Read more...]

Op-Ed: Rich Gurka Reports FCC Dean Paul Bruinsma Resigns in December

January 18, 2025 by Villagers Voice

Submitted by Rich Gurka

For some reason this situation has received scant attention in White County. What I am about to summarize has been very thoroughly vetted and reported on by the Wayne County Press (WCP) and journalist Len Wells.

In December 2024 Dr. Paul Bruinsma resigned as Dean of Instruction at Frontier Community College (FCC) in Fairfield. Dr. Bruinsma was hired at the March 2013 meeting of the Illinois Eastern Community Colleges (IECC) Board of Trustees. This was after the IECC conducted a thorough background check of Dr. Bruinsma via an outside firm. So For the last 10 years Dr. Bruinsma has been the top dog at FCC. The top guy, not a teacher, teacher’s aide or a janitor. [Read more...]

IPRB’s Seth Whitehead: Experts Agree: Trying to Electrify Everything is a Bad Idea

December 24, 2024 by Kathy Sands

The push to electrify everything – including transportation, home heating and cooking – coupled with exploding energy demand from data centers and “green” energy manufacturing will lead to rolling blackouts and sky-high energy costs.

You don’t have to take the petroleum industry’s word for it. That’s the blunt conclusion reached by grid executives and think tanks that study such things all day, every day, not to mention “energy transition” enthusiasts such as the New York Times, Politico and Chicago Tribune. [Read more...]

OpEd: The Status Quo Doesn’t Work for Working Families:

December 2, 2024 by Kathy Sands

By Congressman Mike Bost

The 2024 election delivered a powerful message to the D.C. swamp: the voters were fed up with leaders who ignored their struggles. They handed President Trump and Republican majorities in both houses of Congress a mandate for change. From factory floors and family farms to Main Streets and mom-and-pop shops, working Americans rejected the status quo that had long ago left them behind. Even traditionally Democrat-leaning states like New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and California saw significant shifts toward President Trump, highlighting the growing disconnect between D.C. Democrats and the rest of the country. [Read more...]

Op-Ed by Rep. Mike Bost (IL-12) Supporting the Farming Industry

September 24, 2024 by Villagers Voice

For the last half of the 20th century, no voice captured the essence of the American spirit better than Paul Harvey. It’s been 15 years since his passing, and it’s easy to forget that he reached 24 million Americans each week on the radio and in newspapers. But what drew people to Harvey wasn’t just his humor or wit—it was his love of celebrating everyday heroes. [Read more...]
