Justice David K. Overstreet and the Illinois Supreme Court have announced the appointment of Brian Shinkle as a Resident Circuit Judge for Edwards County in the Second Judicial Circuit.
Mr. Shinkle was appointed to fill the Second Circuit vacancy created by the death of Judge Michael J. Valentine on November 5, 2024. The appointment of Mr. Shinkle is effective February 10, 2025, and will conclude on December 7, 2026, following the November 2026 general election. [Read more...]
NCOE Superintendent Matt Vollman told the school board on Wednesday night that the number of days that students had been out of school recently was going to push the end of school date back to May 29. Wednesday was day eight of missed school days due to extreme ice and snow storms blanketing the area. The board discussed the necessity and concerns about getting kids back to school as the rural roads are always a consideration. It was also noted that there are students who are dependent on services the school district provides such as meals.
“So I know it's tough on bus drivers sometimes, and we don't want them to go down a place that's not safe, of course, but we got to do our best to get these kids back in,” the Superintendent said. It was remarked that the temperatures were warming up to the 40s on Friday and that hopefully all the current snow and ice would be off the roads by the coming week. [Read more...]
Indian Creek Township Road Commissioner David Wheeler gave the Township board an extensive report of the efforts of him and his crew to clear Township roads and move downed trees during the recent ice storm. This included multiple days of work and even assistance with a stolen car. He said the team worked continuously from Jan 5-15, even during the night, moving trees, sanding roads and assisting stranded vehicles. The use of the Township backhoe had been requested to drag a stolen car to where a wrecker could get to it. Wheeler said the community’s assistance in cutting up downed trees and plowing roads helped his department out a lot. He expressed his appreciation for their help. The Village of Norris City is calling a Special Emergency meeting for tonight at 5;00 p.m. at Village Hall. The winter storm that struck the Village this week has deposited substantial ice and snow causing the Village Hall to leak due to the accumulation, and putting employees and Village property at risk. The Norris City Dale blacktop west of Norris City is closed due to dangerous icy road conditions. The closure is at the curve on the county line of White and Hamilton counties.
UPDATE:The Voice has received word that a downed power line is the cause of the road closure.
