Sixteen seniors from the Carmi-White County and Norris City school districts presented their small businesses at the annual CEO Trade Show on Monday night. The largest class since the program started in 2017 again featured the variety of talents and ideas of the area's young people. NCOE had seven students in the class and CWC had nine participants. Riley and Racheal Peyton, formerly the Peyton Sisters and noted locally for gospel music, just signed their first recording contract on Monday this week. The sisters have been singing together since they were ages five and six and have ventured into writing and recording contemporary Christian music under the name RENEE. The recording contract was signed in Franklin, Tennessee at the offices of Gotee Records (gotee.com), Gotee is the record company of Toby Mac and home to the following recording artists: Cochren and Co., Aaron Cole, Courtnie Ramirez, Jon Reddick, Ryan Stevenson, Joseph O'Brien, Terrian, Richlin, and Aguilar. The Carmi-White County district CUSD #5 school board met in a special meeting last night with one issue on the agenda. After a few minutes in open session and allowing for public comment, the board went into executive session to discuss a the suspension without pay for high school teacher Erin Pennington for four days on April 20, 21, 24, and 25, 2023 and a remediable warning also for her. The board gave its unanimous approval to both resolutions in open session afterwards. Her actual offense was not discussed by the board in open session.

Under the supervision of Milly Pate and NCOE Ag teacher Amanda Stricklin, NCOE Horticulture Club members planted flowers in downtown Norris City today on E. Main Street and South Division.
The downtown planter project was begun last year. Ruth Norris is preparing new historical markers that will also go in the planters, along with Norris City history.
High school teacher Mrs. Humphries gave a report to the NCOE board on Wednesday night about upgrading the sound system in the high school auditorium, including the amplifier, speakers and stage lighting. The recent high school play was a great success, but revealed some deficiencies in the system that she addressed. [Read more...]
On Tuesday this week, Ed Oliver, on behalf of the “Bikes for Books” program, presented a new bicycle and helmet to fourth grade winner Willow Anderson at NCO elementary school. Willow read 75 books throughout the duration of the event and is the daughter of Jonathan and Megan Anderson of Enfield. Ed Oliver is from May Lodge 718 in Norris City. [Read more...]
The White County board gave its approval last night to a courthouse inspection by an engineer to get an assessment of what work is needed to repair the building. As the board gives consideration to how the $1.2 million energy grant is to be spent, they face a deadline of May 31 to submit plans for the use of the money. [Read more...]
After a lengthy closed session last night at the CWC School Board meeting, the board voted to hire Corey Ackerman as a new Principal of the district, filling the vacancy created by the resignation of Dr. Amy Dixon. Retired principal Mary Ann Stocke has been temporarily filling the position at Lincoln Attendance Center.
Update 4/19: It was presumed Mrs. Ackerman would be principal at Lincoln School. Any change in school assignments was not announced in open session to the public. In email correspondence with Superintendent Newell, he stated, "The Board and I as the Superintendent discussed the placement of specific principals in closed session. No Board action was taken. As Superintendent, I assigned Mrs. Ackerman to Washington Elementary School and Mrs. Atteberry to Lincoln Attendance Center." [Read more...]
